Kendrapara Farmer Consumes Pesticides Dies

Kendrapara: A 72-year-old farmer from Kendrapara district reportedly took his own life by consuming pesticide after suffering a significant crop loss due to unseasonal rain on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Daitari Jena, a resident of Kosida village within the Derabish police limits.

According to reports, Jena had taken out a loan to cultivate his land, but the recent heavy rainfall destroyed his entire crop. On Friday, he visited his field to assess the damage and was devastated by what he found. He returned home and consumed pesticides.

Jena’s family members rushed him to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The incident has left the family in shock and grief.

This marks the second such incident in Kendrapara district in recent days. Earlier, another farmer, 52-year-old Gourahari Mallick, died of a cardiac arrest attributed to crop loss.

Mallick, who lived in Santhapur village under the Derabishi block, was also taken to the district headquarters hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors.

It was reported that Gourahari had cultivated paddy crops on over three acres of land after borrowing Rs 60,000 from Santhapur PACS and an additional Rs 50,000 from a bank to purchase seeds and fertilizers. Unfortunately, the unseasonal rains dashed his hopes for a successful harvest.

The heavy rainfall has caused widespread crop damage, leaving many farmers in distress.
